Driver Biography
MIKE LAUTERBORN
![]() |
After a very successful 2 years of drag racing in New York, Mike started racing moto-cross in 1970. Turned professional in 1974, than raced AMA pro moto-cross until 1976. During this time over 100 wins were recorded in the Western New York area. In 1975 he earned National #96 with the AMA.
1976 BULTACO AT THE ENFIELD TRACK NEAR ITHACA NY.
ENFIELD TRACK CHAMPION 360 OPEN
Mike turned to Speedway racing in 1977 becoming Rookie of the Year that year. Over the next two years Mike recorded over 20 wins at Batavia Raceway, Batavia, NY and Champion Speedway in Owego, NY.
1979 .....1990 Mike turned to AMA Enduro Racing, Trials, and Hare scrambles winning many events in Sr. A Class. In 1985 he was ranked 3rd in the USA, (AMA hare scrambles). The last full season Mike'd raced motorcycles, 1989, he won the Sr. A Enduro class in AMA district 4, western N.Y.
The next step started in 1991 when the first full size sprint car was purchased from John King. The first feature win was recorded with the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) Club at Edelweiss Speedway in Quebec, Canada in 1992.
Mike has found Sprint Car racing the most challenging and difficult of all the Motorsports that he has attempted. His #41 Sprint Car are usually found in the top 10 in any meet, but he is still striving for that championship year.
In the 1997 season Mike and crew brought the #41 Woodpecker to its best season standing of 4th place with the ESS club. We also earned "Most Improved Driver of the Year", and our crew chief Rob Dietrick, earned "Mechanic of the Year".
As a follow up in the 1998 season Mike and crew brought the Woodpecker to a 6th place finish overall with 4 dash for cash wins, 8 heat wins, yet again proving the consistency of the driver and crew.
1999
Was another good year for the 41 team. even though we traveled to
most of the races with only 1 crew person, BILL ALHART, we ended up in
5th place
overall with the ESS club.
1999 was our last full season with the ESS club. Hopefully the experience we
have gained in the past 9 years with sprint cars will lead to bigger and better
things.

FREEDOM SPEEDWAY WIN
2000
Brought a major change to our racing program...we went USAC
SILVER BULLET racing and competed in 410 non-wing shows for the first time.
Experience was gained in 5 types of race cars in 2000...SILVER BULLET asphalt and
dirt, 410 wing, 410 non-wing & 360 wing.....what a year!!.
Mike won the first 410 non-wing heat race he was ever in (LINCOLN PARK, IN.)....
than won (2) 360 wing feature races in New York.
Mike also crewed on the #19 INDY CAR of LOGAN RACING at TEXAS SPEEDWAY with
STEVIE REEVES as the driver.
IN 2001
we had hoped to concentrate on the 410 non-wing USAC sprinters,
but the lack of a crew that could travel, hampered our effort, we only did 4 non-wing shows.
Mike raced mainly in the western NY area driving a big block modified for Chuck
Hebing, 360 wing sprinters for Bud Burlew and ELS president Rick
Dumigan. He also raced Speedway motorcycles at Champion Speedway (won
1 race)
RACING NON WING WITH THE CALIFORNIA SCRA GROUP.
.
2002
brought another exciting change to the Lauterborn
Electric racing team....We teamed up with the Rochester NY based ESS
#13 SPRINTER EXPRESS TEAM of Dwight Roth and driver Billy "The
Kid" Coffey for some selected 410 & 360 wing and non- wing shows in the
spring and summer.
Mike raced 2 USAC SILVER CROWN dirt races, one at Eldora
and Syracuse Fairground, 4 SCRA non-wing races, 3 ESS 360 wing
shows, 1 NSA race at Fonda speedway, and a few SOS 360 wing races.
MIKE raced in AUSTRALIA January
and February of 2002 in the CLIFFORD EXCAVATIONS #3 Sprint car. A big
thanks to GEOFF CLIFFORD from Terang, Victoria. Our best out of 10 races was a
4th at ADELAIDE SPEEDWAY.
SPRINTER EXPRESS & LAUTERBORN ELECTRIC
were the USA sponsors for the
trip down under.
